It’s my goal to bring you joy with every skein of yarn all year long, but Advent calendars are something special. They provide respite in the midst of a very busy season, and this year’s Advent calendar is no exception.

When I was about ten, I had a conversation with a family friend who was a high school art teacher. We were talking about how great it is that all shades of purple go so well together–more so than other colors. Even back then, purple was my favorite color. I know many of you love purple as much as I do, and many of us also share a love of flowers. This year I decided to put those two things together and create an Advent calendar inspired by purple flowers like these:

I’ll be dyeing all the the mini skeins in shades of purple ranging from lightest lilac to deepest eggplant and everything in between. I’ll be alternating between semi-solid colorways and Splashed & Speckled colorways. Altogether the colorways will create a lovely gradient set. 

Each set will include twenty-five 20 gram mini skeins packaged in their own individual numbered boxes. The idea is to open one box each day beginning on December 1st and ending on Christmas Day. However, this is a no-guilt kit. If it takes longer or if you decide to start early, that’s okay. It just means more time to enjoy the creative process. 

This year you can choose from four carefully selected yarn bases, and you have the option of adding a full-sized skein as well. Since I’m offering multiple yarn weights, you’ll get a list of pattern possibilities rather than a single pattern. The list will include pattern ideas for both knitting and crochet and some tips for using the Advent calendar to weave as well.

I’ll include the list with your Advent calendar, but in the meantime, I have a fingering-weight bundle and a DK-weight bundle on Ravelry available to see now.

Please be aware that this is a preorder, which means I’ll be dyeing up and packaging your Advent calendars in time to ship them on or before November 6th. I can ship these anywhere within the US and to Canada as well.

Fresh from the Dye Pots

This week I dyed Van Gogh’s Starry Night on several yarn bases. Here it is on Sock Perfection:

This is an assigned-pooling colorway that works great with Dawn Barker’s Float pattern or my new Field of Flowers Shawl pattern.

I also dyed Monarch Butterfly and Indian Jezebel Butterfly on Stained Glass Fingering:

These colorways look great with the Knitting by the Pool Ponchette pattern.

On a Personal Note

I have mentioned that one of our daughters has been teaching in Arizona for the last couple years. I’m excited to announce that she took a teaching job nearby. As I write this I’m expecting her to arrive any minute, but I’m keeping it a secret from her little brothers who will be so excited to see her! They know she’s coming, but they don’t know it’s today. It will be great to have her in the area again!
