If you ask me, DK-weight yarn is the perfect happy medium. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy making lightweight shawls and garments from sock-weight yarn too, but here’s what I love about DK-weight yarn:

• It’s great all year long–not too thick and not too thin
• Projects go soooo much faster than they do with fingering-weight yarn
• Each stitch is more visible, which means you can show off your wonderful stitch motifs from a greater distance

Right now I have lots of lovely colorways in stock on both my DK-weight yarn bases. Here’s a bit about the two bases:

Squoosh DK is made of 100% extra-soft superwash merino, and it comes in big 4-ounce skeins with 250 yards per skein. It’s a 4-ply yarn. This yarn base can be washed in the machine on cold, but it should still be air dried.

Buttery Soft DK is a luxury 2-ply yarn base made of 45% non-superwash merino, 45% baby alpaca, and 10% mulberry silk. It has 245 yards per 3.5-ounce skein. It’s wonderfully soft! This yarn base should definitely be washed by hand because the non-superwash merino and the alpaca can both felt. I’m pretty sure I’ve had this yarn base in my shop longer than any other!

If I were making a project for a child, I’d use Squoosh DK. If I were making one for myself, I’d tend toward Buttery Soft DK.

Monet’s Cathedral

While Buttery Soft DK is one of my oldest yarn bases, Monet’s Cathedral is one of my oldest colorways. It was inspired by one of Monet’s paintings of the Cathedral of Rouen:

This particular one is called Rouen Cathedral, Facade (Morning Effect). He painted the same scene at different times of the day and different times of the year, saying, “Everything changes, even stone.” You can find out more about this amazing series of paintings right here.

September Club Colorway

For September’s club colorway, I chose a still-life painting by Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld. He was a French painter who spent a lot of time in Italy and was known for his many landscape paintings. He created this painting, known simply as Still Life, in 1810:

The colors in the painting really drew me in. I thought this painting would make a great transition between summer and fall. If you want to join the club or make any changes, the deadline is the end of August.

Advent Calendar Update

I still have some Advent calendars available for preorder. I have plenty of Splendid Sock and Stained Glass Fingering, but I only have a small quantity of So Silky Fingering and Squoosh DK still available. As I have mentioned, the theme for this year is Purple Flowers like the ones shown here:

I’ll be alternating between semi-solids and Splashed and Speckled colorway, creating a gradient of lovely purples.
