Palate Cleanser Projects with Mini Skeins

I hope you are as excited as I am about the coming of cooler weather!

I have a great fondness for small projects where I can have the satisfaction of actually having something lovely and DONE in fairly short order, especially because I don’t have as much time to knit as I would like, so projects tend to take quite awhile.

If you are like me–or if you just like a small project to use as a “palate cleanser” between larger projects–then mini skeins offer lots of fun possibilities.

Masquerade Set of 5 Mini Skeins

A few weeks ago I dyed up a rainbow of semi-solid sock-weight minis. I originally created 15 repeatable colorways that would all play nicely together, and I have been adding new colors as I can.

Citrus Grove Set of 5 Minis

I have lots of mini skeins available individually, and I also made up a number of pretty sets. Each set has five 20 gram mini skeins with 87 yards each, so I thought I’d show you the sets today along with some lovely patterns I think would work well with them.

The Little Mermaid

All the patterns listed below are available on Ravelry for free. Some were made specifically to be used with mini skeins while others weren’t specifically made for minis, but I thought they would work well.

Florida Coast Mini Skein Set of Five

The first pattern I want to show you is the Reyna shawl by Noora Backlund. This shawl has quite a following. I think it would be lovely with the starker color contrast that would come from these semi solid minis. I didn’t include photos of the other patterns because they are copyrighted, but Noora gave permission for this one:

The next pattern is a top-down sock pattern I’ve had my eyes on for awhile. It’s called the Vanilla Latte Sock pattern by Virginia Rose-Jeanes, and it looks great with stripes.

Tropical Island Set of Five Minis

This next one is a fun, simple hat that would be great as a place to showcase all these fun, bright colors. It’s called the Sockhead Slouch Hat by Kelly McClure.

This one is for gradient fingerless mitts, and it’s by Krista McCurdy. The yardage needed is just 3 mini skeins worth. I think it would look great using 2 coordinating minis along with this Confetti colorway I dyed on minis too using lots of the same dye colors as the semi-solids.

Confetti

The last pattern I want to show you is one that makes me want to learn to crochet even more than I already do. It’s by Adrienne Lash, and it’s called the Windowpane Scarf. It’s just so preeettty!

I’ll leave you with the thought that it will be Christmas before we know it (scary, right?), so I made a set of minis that would make a great hat or pair of socks or even stocking for Christmas.

Happy fiber artistry!
