Hand-Dyed Silk Scarves

Good morning, and happy Friday to you. This week I wanted to share something a little different with you.

A couple times a year, I dye up silk scarves. I dyed some up recently, and I have a small but lovely collection available now. These are so much fun to make, and whether I use my yarn “recipes” or new color combinations, each one is a unique and never to be repeated creation–even more than hand-dyed yarn.

What I love about these silk scarves is that they can worn year-round to complete an outfit and add panache. They also make wonderful gifts.

This time I dyed them in several different sizes and two different kinds of silk. Let me show you a few of them.

The smallest ones are made of silk chiffon. These neck scarves are 8 x 54 inches, and they fold down to just about nothing. They would also look great on the rim of a hat, and they travel very well too. Here is one of the silk chiffon scarves in my Monet’s Cathedral colorway:

The silk chiffon scarves can also be used in nuno felting.

The next size up is 8 x 72 inches, and I dyed these in habotai silk. Habotai silk is very smooth, shiny, and, well, silky. This size can be wrapped around your neck a couple times and worn in lots of different ways. Here is a great colorway for fall. This is Lothlorien:

The next size up is the classic square made famous by Hermès. This is the first time I’ve dyed this size, and they are fabulous. They can be worn in a multitude of different beautiful styles. If you go to youtube and look up Hermès scarves, you’ll find all sorts of ways of wearing this classic scarf size. Here is a 35 x 35 inch scarf that I dyed in my Beautiful Universe colorway:

…and here is another one I named Spring Breeze:

The largest size is more of a shawl than a scarf. I just dyed two of these really large 35 x 84 inch silk shawls. These would be a great finishing touch to drape over your shoulders for an evening out on the town or a wedding. I can’t decide which one to show you here, so I’ll show you both. Here is the one I dyed using my Afremov’s Farewell to Anger colorway:

I just finished dyeing all of this month’s club colorways, but I also dyed up Lilac and Turquoise this week. Here is Lilac on Suri Lace Cloud:

…and here is Turquoise on Stained Glass Sock:

While I was twisting and labeling Turquoise yesterday, I noticed a couple other colorways that would look great with it. Here are Visit to Lyme, Turquoise, and The Hands of the King together on Stained Glass Sock:

Thank You!

I wanted to thank everyone who ordered an Advent calendar from me this year. I am going to start dyeing them this weekend. It’s quite a process as I’m sure you know, but it’s also a great joy for me to be able to bring these to you. I hope you enjoy this year’s colorways and pattern a great deal.

Have a wonderful weekend. I’ll “see” you next Friday.
