Fresh from the Dye Pots

Good morning and happy Friday! This week I have been dyeing up a storm, and I wanted to show you what’s new in the shop.

Purple Prism

I started the week with some more Purple Prism. Here it is on Super Sport:

A Light in Dark Places

After that I dyed up its sister colorway, A Light in Dark Places. The assigned pooling colors are all the same, but the background color is black instead of eggplant. This time I dyed it on almost all the yarn bases. Here it is on Squiggle Sock:

Afremov’s Farewell to Anger

Then I dyed up Afremov’s Farewell to Anger. I’m going to take this opportunity to show you how differently superwash yarn bases and non-superwash yarn bases dye up. Here is Farewell to Anger on Super Sport, which is a superwash yarn:

Here it is on Buttery Soft DK, which is a non-superwash yarn:

The reason they turn out so differently has to do with two factors–the speed at which the dye strikes and the types of fiber the yarn is made of. The dye strikes faster with superwash yarn whereas with non-superwash, the slower speed gives the dye a chance to move around and blend more. Regarding the types of fiber, mohair, nylon, and sheep’s wool tend to dye up more brightly than alpaca, yak, and silk. Super Sport is made of 80% superwash merino and 20% nylon whereas Buttery Soft DK is made of non-superwash merino, baby alpaca, and silk.

Which effect do you like best? I like them both, but above all I enjoy seeing how unique each colorway and base combination is.

After the Rain

Yesterday, I dyed up one of my personal favorites. It’s called After the Rain, and I dyed it on 9 different yarn bases. Here it is on Super Sport:

Eight Days of Easter Kits

I still have two remaining Eight Days of Easter kits available and ready to ship. These make great gifts! The kits include eight butterfly colorways in a combination of assigned pooling, semi-solid, splashed and speckled, and Ikat colorways. The kit also includes a knit shawl pattern that I created to make the most of each type of colorway. I have to admit that I have been wearing my butterfly shawl almost every day since I made it.

Next Week

Since next Friday is Good Friday, I will not be sending out my weekly newsletter, so I’ll “see” you in two weeks. I hope you have a wonderful Easter and a beautiful spring.
